Instructions and tips on doing the gap-fill exercises

You can fill the gaps in any order you like.
You fill a selected gap if you
double-click on the right word on the list.
You can make one or two guesses for each gap or you can just leave it blank.
If you make the third wrong guess for the same gap, you'll have to start the whole exercise again!

In case you need further advice, we suggest:
  • first you read the whole text without stopping and bothering with the gaps.
  • you read again and fill those gaps only which you are very sure of.
  • then you can read through the text again and go back to the gaps you have left out.
  • you deal with the trickiest ones when the low number of unused words on the list
gives you
    a better chance to guess.
  • always try to identify what part of speech is missing from the text (verb, noun, adjective, adverb etc).
You may ask for the correct answers when you are well over halfway through the exercise.
Remember you can make a fresh start any time you click on this: ‘Have another go’

Please note if you make the third wrong guess for the same gap, you'll have to start the whole exercise!
But don't think that starting again is a disaster. It is in fact a very good way of testing what you've just learned and this can improve your memory a lot.
Keep it in mind that doing a gap-fill for the first time is much more difficult than any other time afterwards.
Real profit will come to you the second or third time, or even later.

If you find an exercise too hard, always be
ready to move on to another task. Don't waste your time on long and complicated texts! Be your own master and select exercises well to achieve your own goals!
